NaNoWriMo

What's it all about?

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month: a challenge to write 50k/a brand new novel in one month. NaNoWriMo takes places every November and spanned a more lenient spinoff, Camp NaNoWriMo, where you can strive to reach your own word count goal every April and July.

Winning NaNoWriMo

Write a 50k (or longer) novel, starting 1st November and finishing on the 30th. It must be a work of fiction and you cannot continue a preexisting work in progress.

...at least, that's the official rules for if you want to 'win' and submit your word count for coupons and bragging rights. NaNoWriMo is so popular that plenty of people (like myself) 'go rebel' and finish existing drafts or write short stories, nonfiction, or any other writing-goal you can dream up. There is even an official rebels forum on the website. The point is to get you writing, so do with it what you will.

Me & NaNo

  • 2011? - Discovered NaNoWriMo. Wrote 30k words of a truly terrible Norse-mythology inspired murder mystery/apocalypse fantasy. I should see if I still have the draft somewhere...
  • 2012 - WON! NaNo take 2! Another Camp, but this time I went more rebel and worked on RPG-related projects.
  • 2013-2019 - Nada. Life happened. School happened. I kept writing, just not fiction.
  • 2020 - THE GRAND RETURN. I'm back at my rebel ways with a goal of hitting 50 hrs of writing. See NaNoWriMo 2020.
