My Rating System

Whether reading, watching, or otherwise enjoying media, I believe in [[!Write about what you read|writing about what you consume]]. That's what my Library is for.

Ratings are personal. I don't believe any rating system can truly work across such a wide variety of media, opinions, and preferences. My rating system is mine. It's not meant to be authoratative or offer more than a rough comparison across pieces but rather a reflection of how I personally felt about the work.

Rating

I don't pretend that my favourite 5 star nostaligia trip book is equivalant to the 5 star award winning film, only that I deeply enjoyed both for different reasons. To get the full picture, best to read the notes. But the stars are there for a quick reference. As a guideline, I adapted Goodreads star rankings.

  • ★★★★★ - BLOODY BRILLIANT
  • ★★★★☆ - Loved it
  • ★★★☆☆ - Liked it
  • ★★☆☆☆ - It was OK...
  • ★☆☆☆☆ - Hard nope
  • ☆☆☆☆☆ - Trash
  • DNF - Did not finish. Usually but not necessarily a reflection of my rating.

Idea Richness

A big part of why I believe you should [[!Write about what you read]] is to pick out the kernels of brilliance within and see what they spark in your own head. The [[!Idea richness]] rating is a reflection of how many thought-provoking concepts and pure information the book packs and/or evocative worldbuilding idea and writing that spark ideas for the [[!Scrapbook]].

This is not necessarily a comment on overall quality, but unique and/or inspiring ideas is my jam so it may influence the rating.

  • ★★★★★ - I lost count of my highlights
  • ★★★★☆ - Brimming with originality
  • ★★★☆☆ - Some cool concepts or fresh information
  • ★★☆☆☆ - Does what it says on the tin, but nothing more
  • ★☆☆☆☆ - Nothing particularly memorable
  • ☆☆☆☆☆ - Zero insights. I don't know how this could happen

Overall

This is the secret sauce hidden behind the scenes but used to determine things like my top picks and recommendations. It's a cocktail of averaging the rating and idea richness plus a dash of guesstimation depending on my overall feeling or current mood.

It's a flat score from 1-6 that follows the same system as the rating with the exception of 6, which is for those top picks where 5 stars is just not enough.
