My Favourite Authors

A collection of my favourite authors, based on the books of theirs that I have read, style, [[!worldbuilding]] and ideas, and/or a dash of sentimental value.

[[!JRR Tolkien]]

  • Has written some of My favourite novels such as Lord of the Rings.
  • Love his affinity for mythology, both for creating his own and bringing the original works to life.
  • Appreciate his unashamed defense of fantasy and literary critique.
  • Can be a little too much [[!worldbuilding]] at times.
  • Not such a fan of the numerous spin-offs and imitators inspired by his works.

Douglas Adams

  • Dear Lord his wit and style are out of this world.
  • [[B) Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy]] ruined me for most other humor novels.

[[!Jorge Luis Borges]]

  • No one compresses more brilliance into fewer pages than Borges.
  • I love how he plays not just with imaginative [[!worldbuilding]] but also the [[!Literary device]]s in his weird fiction.
  • He loves mysteries, books, and imaginative weirdness. That is a recipe straight to my heart.

CS Lewis

  • There is definite sentimental value to the Chronicles of Narnia but they are actually not my favourite (except The Silver Chair, which was the first big [[!Plot twist]] I read and packed all the kinds of fantasy I loved).
  • However, I love his more adult works and forthright yet humorous style to works like The Screwtape Letters.

Adrian Tchaikovsky

  • He makes weird fiction an enthralling story instead of just a collection of concepts.
  • His [[!zoology]] influence is on display in books like B-Cage of Souls and I love it.

Jeff VanderMeer

  • A master of weird fiction [[!worldbuilding]], spinning up incredible settings and ideas.
  • Just wish his work would include an actual (and satisfying) plot more often.
  • Brevity is not a thing.
  • I may have a love hate relationship with his work, which oscillates between imaginary genius and drawn out dribble. That said, I'll still read just about anything he writes because the weird is just too good.
